I don’t think anyone needs to be reminded of how tough the jobs market is at the moment. Gone are the days of having 2 or 3 job offers in hand, now it’s an achievement to get called for an interview!

Despite this I have been surprised by the number of Hiring Managers and HR Mangers who are aghast at the number of people who still presenting so poorly at interview.
Interviewers will detect lack of preparation very quickly and will view it as a sign of low motivation and a lack of genuine interest.

There is no excuse for not being prepared for an interview. Interviewing is a skill and as with all skills, preparation and practice will enhance the quality of your interview technique. Preparation can make the difference between getting an offer and getting rejected.
Here are some pointers to help you in your interview preparation:

· Know your CV
Review your CV thoroughly and be prepared to answer questions on any aspect of your CV. Focus on experiences you feel are most relevant and match them to the employer's needs

· Research the Organisation
Employers want applicants who have had the initiative and enthusiasm to find out something about their organisation. Research their website, brochure, reports, policies, mission statements and online press releases

· Research the Job
Review the job description thoroughly. Consider phoning people who are in the types of positions that you are seeking. This will give you some industry knowledge before you go for the job and help you to be more specific about what you are looking for.

· Do a Mock Interview
Practice with a friend or do a mock interview with a career coach. This is an invaluable way to understand how you can you improve, enhance, develop, or revise your answers and/or delivery

· Make a List of questions
Anticipate questions and prepare winning answers especially to the ones you fear most. Don’t be general in your answers; employers want specific examples to demonstrate what you have done in the past and what your capabilities are

In summary, prepare, prepare, prepare.

Webroot, the internet security firm is to create 50 technology jobs over the next two years and is to establish its international headquarters in the city. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Webroot was established in 1997. The company develops internet security solutions for consumers and businesses.

Webroot protects corporate networks from online and internal threats and allows consumers to download music, store digital files, bank, shop and search safely.

Increase in the Number of Permanent Jobs

A new report by the National Recruitment Federation has shown that there has been a rise in the number of permanent employment positions advertised. Agencies across the country are now reporting an increase in the number of permanent jobs, across a range of sectors, being advertised, following a huge slump in 2009. Some of the larger companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Abtran and Paddy Power are all now hiring on a continuous basis.

However, competition is still very high for these positions and candidates need to be at their best when presenting themselves to potential employers through their CV and at the interview stage. Insurance group to create 30 jobs in Navan

Up to 30 new jobs are to be created at the Navan, Co Meath base of insurance group Generali PanEurope.

The new positions will include actuaries, technical support specialists and other roles. The jobs are the result of growth in European and international markets, and the company plans to move to a new location in Navan, where it has been since 1999.

Some 108 people work for Generali's subsidiaries, Generali PanEurope and Generalie International.

Generali also announced plans to buy a new site from IDA Ireland, where it will commission a new building in the IDA Navan Business park, at Athlumney, Navan.

Handling Redundancy the Right Way

A recent survey* of 1,000 people revealed a deep dissatisfaction with how HR handle the redundancy process. Over half of those affected felt they were given no extra support and were left with a very poor perception of their previous employer.

The survey also revealed that almost a third of jobseekers told more than 10 people about their treatment by their ex-employer, thus impacting negatively on the employer brand. The prominence of social media also increases the chance of ex-employees spreading damaging views on the organisation.

Failed work programme cost state almost €900K per person

The Job Training Initiative, a training programme currently managed by FAS, and which is aimed at getting the long term unemployed back to work, is currently under fire. A recent report compiled by Forfas, the state advisory board, has recommended an ‘overhauling’ of a number of the country’s main jobs training initiatives in order to ensure that the state is getting real value for money. According to Forfas the state is spending €970 million on a number of jobs and training programmes but has found that there is a lack of clarity in terms of being able to measure their ‘efficiency and effectiveness’. Forfas also recommend major changes to the community employment scheme, which has an annual budget of €392 million and is one of the largest job programmes in the state.

Finally, the report commented on the payment levels that participants receive and recommended that they should be reviewed to ensure that they do not act as a disincentive for taking jobs in the current job market.
